PnP Failure on POST with new modem installed.

Heya,

I have a Dimension 4300 that had to have its modem replaced. I put the new modem in and during POST, I received this error listed 3 times:

Plug & Play Configuration Error

Plug & Play Configuration Error

Plug & Play Configuration Error

I am assuming this is a resource conflict as Windows XP mirrors this error by saying the modem isn't working properly due to not enough system resources. I've upgraded my BIOS but I still can't find a way around this error as the BIOS have a very limited option set and Windows XP won't allow me to modify the modem properties. I've tried this now with 2 different new modems but I still receive the same error.

I've also tried resetting the NVRAM (ala the caps+scroll+numlock then alt+e in system setup). I keep receiving the error with both modems.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

elessin,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

When did this message start originally? Was there been any additional hardware installed in the system when this started? Were any of the expansion cards moved to a different location in the system?

Try moving all components to their original factory shipped location and remove any added hardware; clear the NVRAM and reboot and see if you still get the same message.

You can find information on clearing the NVRAM on Dimension systems in the Dell Online Knowledge Base article located at the following web address:

Hey,

I've already tried resetting the NVRAM on the machine. I still receive the resource conflict mentioned above. These error messages disappear when I remove the modem from the computer.

Is there any other way around this problem? How is it the original modem worked but a replacement (2 tested actually) won't work? Is there any way to turn off the BIOS PnP option????

elessin,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

If there were no other hardware changes made to the system, I am unsure what may be causing this. I would advise contacting Dell Technical Support for personalized help trouble-shooting the issue.

BUMP, sorry, I administer around 200 machines so I typically don't have time to wait on the phone and this machine is a bit older. If anyone has any other advice please sound off!!
