A quick reply to the last message:

The machine name is immaterial, as long as they are unique.

The workgroup name needs to be the same on all machines

Sub Net Mask is important, usually 255.255.255.0 but must be the same on all machines.

To install a printer over the network use Network Neighborhood (or equivalent) to find the computer with the printer then display the shared devices on that machine.  Double click on the printer icon on that machine (which must be set to shared to be displayed) and the system will try and install the drivers over the network.  You may get the invalid driver message, in which case you will have to install the drivers relevant to the OS on your computer.

The settings for the guest account are irrelevant to getting the network working.

I've just had this sort of problem setting up a network for a customer. Turned off the windows firewall and everything (usually have no problems at all). With being a new Dell computer Norton Internet Security was installed by default and active. It was the firewall within this that was causing the problems. Turned it off and everything appeared as expected.

Internet connection is via a wireless/modem/router containing its own firewall so no problem there.

Hi,

Though I've been reading a few messages on how to file and printer share, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could guide me through the exact steps. I was able to transfer some files from desktop to laptop, however, though the files I want to share are enabled to share, aren't showing up on my laptop. Then I get stuck as to what is going on. The prompt for the folder/hardware name when typed isn't recognized. I'm just plain stuck though having gone through allowing/enabling sharing and various wizards. Please help! Thank you.

Thank you so much. Indeed, while on the phone w/Dell tech (and many were assigned to no avail), it dawned on me to not only dissable windows firewall per the network wizard, but also on both the host and notebook (norton and Mcafee), then while waiting, I went to my network places and there it was, printer and other computers, I was so happy. Thank you though for getting back to me.  It's nice to know there are people out there just to help. Thank you so very much.

When I set up my network  I did create a password on my 98 computer in order to see both networks I had to use a password to log in and I was able to see both. I disable my firewall on my xp computer also.
