Problem Applying Profile to Linkysis

I have a Linkysis wireless router and for the past couple days when I try to connect to my own secured connection to which I have to correct key code for, it says problem applying profile when I try to connect to it. Does anyone know how I can fix this and connect to my own wireless internet connection?

This is a problem with the computer and the profile stored on the computer, not with the router.   Have you tried removing the profile and creating a new one?  Which version of Windows are you running?  Which wireless network adapter do you have on the computer?  Is the utility specific to the wireless adapter managing your wireless network connection or is Windows managing?

I figured it was my computer bc my roommate's works just fine, I just can't figure out how to fix it. I've tried removing the old profile and creating a new one, but that didn't work. I am running Windows XP. I have the Intel PRO/Set wireless system. I don't believe Windows in managing my wireless network bc when I go to the view all available wireless networks from the start button on my desk top it gives me an error saying I have another program running my wireless so it won't work.

Personally, I prefer to use Windows to manage the wireless networks mainly because it is easier to troubleshoot when you have problems.  As a troubleshooting step I suggest changing so that Windows is managing the wireless. If it works and you see how easy it is to use, you may decide to stick with it and your problem is solved.

To change it so that Windows manages the wireless, open the Intel Proset Utility and uncheck the box to let that utility manage the wireless connection.  Then, go to Network Connections, right click your wireless connection, select Properties, then click on the Wireless Networks tab and place a check mark in the box to Let Windows manage the wireless networks.

If that works, and you like it then the problem is solved.  If it works, but you don't like it, post back and we can go through a complicated procedure to try to get the Intel ProSet Utility working again.

Steve,

Thank you so much for your help. Connecting through windows worked! That's what I usually used, but when I had to wipe out my hard drive and get everything back the Dell person who helped me had me use the Intel PROset wireless thing. I never really liked it. So thanks again for your help and step by step directions! I really appreciate it!

Thanks Steve.

I had problem on DELL INSPIRON 1520 - with Intel PRO/Set wireless system utility running my wireless connection. In recent times it used to disconnect 4-5 times in a day with message of "CANNOT APPLY PROFILE" when I tried to connect using the intel wireless utility. Only way it used to work again was to restart the computer - was frustrating. Had similar problem previously with Linksys wireless adapter with Linksys utility running the wireless network. In both cases switching over to "WINDOWS MANAGING WIRELESS"  SOLVED the problem.

INSTRUCTIONS - For People who are searching HOW to disable the Intel PRO/Set wireless system here is the info.

Open Intel Proset wireless- start - programs - Intel PRO/Set wireless & this will open the program

Click on ADVANCED tab in the Intel PRO/Set wireless box and you will see at the bottom to use WINDOWS Network to mange wifi - select that

In the same Intel utility Also make sure you click on TOOLS - Applications settings - and DISABLE (uncheck) show application icon on taskbar.

DONT FORGET the other instruction of steve -

Then, go to Network Connections, right click your wireless connection, select Properties, then click on the Wireless Networks tab and place a check mark in the box to Let Windows manage the wireless networks.

(you need to do this if you get disconnected from the network after initial connection after switching over to the Windows wireless managment status).
