Hi DWP5 & jck11
From the Start Menu, right click on Network and select Properties This will bring up the following screen. Then "turn off password protected sharing"

i tried that as well without success. fyi, when on the vista computer (the one i want to back up) i go into properties/security of the shared drive on the buffolo link station (onto which i try to backup) it shows "special permission". when i try to change that to full control for "everyone" it denies access to the buffolo. this is strange because otherwise the buffolo link station is fully accessible.
