Problem installing an ethernet card on Windows ME

Terrible OS, I know, but fixing the cpu for a friend so upgrading isn't really an option.

It seems no matter what ethernet card i install on his Dimension L866r (Windows ME) i get a blue screen error on startup.  Disabling the card in safe mode removes the error, but I'm not sure on a solution to the error.

The error messsage is:

Error OE : 016F : Bff8364b

Cmdninst caused an ivalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at 016f:bff8e64b

Any ideas?

Could the problem possible be that the network card is sharing a base address or IRQ with another piece of hardware in the system?

Thanks for the fast response, but I've been there before.  Upgrading the drivers did not fix the problem, there must be some interferance related to windows ME on bootup, b/c problem is the same when i enable any of the 4 network cards i've tried.  Disabling them in safe mode and then rebooting allows it to boot normally but then I have no card again.

It should have #9 reserved for the card but have you checked to see if yous BIOS is up to date?

Yeah, have updated them recently, finally ended up doing a clean reboot and starting over.
