Problem with Internet Connection

I just re installed windows XP home edition onto our Dell 8300. I followed the manuel on how to install it. The problem now is that for some reason it doesn't want to detect our internet broadband connection. When I first got the computer I just pluged in the wires and I was network ready but from some reason now the wizard doesn't want to sence the connect. The computer thinks that we are using a diel up connection for some reason. Although on the back of the computer there is a red light shining from where the ethernet cable goes. Does that mean it is a bad cable or something? Any how all I know is that the wizard doesn't want to detected the network. And I know the network is working because I'm writing this on the other computer connected to the same broadband Cable Modem. I hope someone can help me out.

Thank you for your time

Are you connecting directly through the broadband modem or are you running through a router?  If connected directly, note that whenever you change computers connected to the modem, you need to do a reset - that is shut down the computers and the modem, then turn on the modem first, allow it synchronize for about 3 minutes, then turn on the computers.   To stop it from trying to dial a connection, open Internet Explorer, click on Tools > Internet Options, then click on the Connections tab and make sure that "Never Dial a Connection is selected.  Are you getting a valid IP address for your internet connection?  To check this, open a command prompt window by going to Start > Run and typing cmd then click on OK.  Then type ipconfig /all and see what IP address you getting for the device connected to the cable modem.  Report what you find.

On this computer your IP information works but on the other computer it doesn't pick up anything. Any ideas on what to make it reconize that the modem is there. When we first got it, it reconized it right away.

The chipset drivers should be on the Resource CD.  If you computer has an integrated network adapter, it will not be recognized until the chipset drivers are installed.  If you can't find the chipset drivers and the network adapter drivers on the resource CD, you can download them by clicking on the Downloads tab at the top of the Dell forum window.

I got 8 disks with the Dell computer. 5 of them are application - disks for Sonic recorder, PowerDvd, Sound Blaster, WordPerfect and AntiVirus, Support, Multimedia, and internet software. Another disk is the operating system disk. There are 2 Drivers and Utilities disks..

1) Dell Dimension ResourceCD - this has a bunch of stuff on it but none looks as though i can install anything that will help the computer locat the modem.

2) 56K telephony Data/Fax/Voices Modem Software for Microsoft Windows - all this one seems to do is try to install a dial up connection.

I'm just lost with this whole reinstallation stuff :(

When you reinstalled Windows, did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard?  These drivers usually need to be the first drivers installed before Windows will recognize many of the other devices.
