Problem with internet connection

Hi my name is Tom

I have a Dell Dimension 4600, Windows XP, and in the previous years I have always used wireless connection.  But I want to use the ethernet cable now.  But I have a problem everytime I hook up my cable in the back, the orange light comes on prolly saying I have connection, but there is no pop up screen notifying me that I have internet connection. I looked into the network connections folder and there was no connection just my wireless.  So when I turn off my wireless connection, I have no internet at all.  Could anyone help my out? I just want to use the ethernet cable instead off the wireless!!!

Thanks

It sounds like the device drivers for your Ethernet adapter may not be installed. Go into the Control Panel, double-click the "System" icon, click the "Hardware" tab, and click the "Device Manager" button.

Check to make sure there aren't any adapters with yellow question marks or red X's on them. This indicates that the drivers are incorrect, not installed, or the device may be disabled.
