Problem with my Internet connection randomly dropping.

I have read the many threads concerning this but most seem to be regarding wireless, mine is not wireless.

My connection just randomly drops for no apparent reason. Then either reconnects (maybe 2% of the time) or the only way to get it back is to restart my PC. It happens quite often and I never had the problem with my old PC. I just got this PC recently and I refuse to accept that I have to restart it 10-15 times a day just to use the internet. I called my ISP and they sent out a technician, the connections, signal strenth and all was fine. He did mention though that he has had alot of recent service calls concerning this very problem for users with Vista. He also mentioned that it also may be the Network card not working well in conjunction with Vista (It's a Broadcom card). Although I am excited that I finally buckled down and bought a new comp, the excitement is quickly going away each time I am booted off of the internt while working on something or playing a multi player game.

I'm hoping someone had the exact same problem and hopefulyy has a fix. I have seen some fix the problem with a tweak to settings and some with updating the drivers manually. I'm hoping one of those can fix it as well. Would upgrading the Modem to a brand new one maybe help as well?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Have you looked at this thread?

Perhaps the wired connection is affected by power settings also?

Yes I already set that as well. I have pretty much done everything I have read in these forums so far and nothing. All Dell tries to do is direct me towards the "Fee Based" help line. I am not going to pay for them to "possibly" fix a problem when I already payed for a computer that should be working correctly to begin with.

Hoping someone here that had the same problem can help.

Thanks for the reply though.

"He did mention though that he has had alot of recent service calls concerning this very problem for users with Vista. "

Does that mean you have your computer plugged directly into the modem?

I would suggest using a router between the modem and your computer, if it is so. That will provide some extra security and may help with "issues" related to Vista...

I had a problem with a friend's computer was dropping it's connection. Ended up being th lease was set up for an hour and the computer wasn't renewing it.

Your ISP is the one to be looking at for support, it's their obligation.  No Connecty, then no Payee. I have been having similar problems last few days.  My Provider did give me an install Cd" for  the DSL"  with a Quick Care App.   It checks and repairs the DNS fast  and just basically saves me from restarting my computer.  still  A pain though.  You can see If Broadcom has a patch at their web site too.
