Did you replace the "chipset driver" for your system when you reinstalled XP? All of Dell's available downloads can be found under the "Product Support/Downloads" tab at the upper left corner of the Forum window.
You need to install the chipset drivers. Without the chipset drivers, you network adapter cannot be recognized, and if you network card cannot be recognized you cannot install drivers for it. The chipset drivers should be on your resource CD. They are also on the Dell website, but we would need to know which model computer you have in order to provide a link to the correct drivers.
Ok, I went to the Download for Dimension 2350 and downloaded the Intel Chipset. Put it on a CD and installed it onto the other computer. Internet still doesn't work. I tried installing the the drivers for the Ethernet Controller both from the CD I had the .exe program on as well as the driver folders that were extracted from the program. Any help is very much appreciated.
After installing the chipset drivers, did you reboot and let Windows reinstall the drivers for the network adapter? Does the network adapter still show up in Device Manager as a problem device?
I've done just about every combination possible of the following:
1.) Uninstall the Ethernet Controller, reboot, and have Windows tell me they've found hardware and that I need to provide software for the drivers.
2.) Install the Chipset for my 2350 Dimension.
None of this has worked.. And let me just make sure you know volcano11, my network adaptor works fine. It shows up in my Device Manager as it should. The problem is with this "Ethernet Controller". Thanks again..
I'm now confused. An ethernet controller is a subtype of network adapter. So, there will never be a problem listed with the network adapter becuase this is just a category of devices. Does Device Manager list the correct name for the ethernet card installed in your computer. If it is the integrated ethernet adapter, then it should be listed as a Broadcom 4401. The correct drivers for this device are at:
The 1394 device, although listed under network adapters is not an ethernet adapter and is not the one you want. The 1394 device is a firewire card. Your ethernet adapter is not installed. Try the drivers for the 4401 card.
Ok.. I just tried installing the Broadcom 4401 drivers. In the readme file it tell me a list of instructions to follow. I followed them only to get a message saying that the Broadcom 4401 driver file doesn't match to my network adaptor.

In the Device Manager, my Network Adaptor is listed as "1394 Net Adaptor". I'll look on my Resource CD for a Broadcom 4401 driver download.. Hopefully it'll work..
Which ethernet adapter do you have on your computer? Are you sure it's the broadcom 4401? Is it possible you ordered the computer with the Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet card? If so, then you might try installing the drivers for that card. These are the only two network cards that are listed as being sold with the 2350.
I'm not sure which one I have. Here's the root of the whole problem. On the DellResource CD it lists the hardware that is installed on my computer by putting a checkmark next to things like "Intel Chipset" as well as the Video/Audio hardware. My problem is that it doesn't match my network adaptor to the listed network adaptors on the Resource CD. I will try the NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet card drivers right after I type this up. Hopefully it'll work..
WooHoo!!! Finally got it to work! Thank you so much volcano11 for the link to that download! I had tried the 4401 drivers on the CD and they didn't work and I didn't want to waste another CD-R with the link you gave me. But, turns out it worked and now the internet is working perfectly. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, I appreciate it so much. And thanks for sticking with my problem volcano11, I owe you one!
You need to post a new message rather than a reply to an existing message. In your new message please explain exactly what you have done. Did you reinstall Windows? Does the network card show up in Device Manager and not show any problems? Each case is different and it gets very confusing trying to answer two or more different questions in the same message thread. Provide as much detail as you can and perhaps we can help.
Help me, I have the same problem with Ethernet Controller, too. My computer is Dimension 8300 series, Intel Pentium 4 processor at 2.8GHz, Intel Pro 100M integrated PCI NIC Card, please help me !!!

Are these the drivers that you have installed?
