Go to Start > Run and type services.msc then hit the Enter key.  Find the DHCP Client service and make sure it is started and set to start automatically.

I did try with the ethernet connection and it works fine with automatically getting the IP address.

That seems to indicate that it is strictly a problem with your wireless network device not a problem with Windows.  I would suggest uninstalling the wireless card, rebooting, and reinstalling the latest drivers for the card.

As a troubleshooting step, see if you can connect with a wired connection to the router with ethernet network card set to obtain an IP address automatically.  Report back what you find.

I'm out of ideas.  It's either a bad network card or something obscure messed up in Windows.  I'll think about it overnight, but otherwise I'm stumped.

Is the Intel ProSet Utility managing your wireless network or is Windows managing?  If you use the one you are not currently using, does DHCP work?

Tried with both, windows manager and intel pro wireless connection manager but the same problem exists.

Hi

I have done that multiple times. I downloaded the latest drivers, once from the dell website and the other time from the intel website. The problem doesnt seem to go away.
One observation is that it connects to the network on DHCP intermittently. Sometimes, after a reboot, it manages to connect to the network...but this behavior is also not consistent.

Tried with both, the windows manager and intel pro wireless utility but the problem still persists.

If your friends have the same laptops and the same network cards. Then I would suggest swapping the network cards with one of known good computers. If the issue follows the card then you know you have a bad one if you still have the same issue with a known good card then you know it is a software issue.  If your friend will allow you to do this.
