Problems accessing home network

I've managed to set up a wireless home network connecting my laptop with my wifes.  Both are running XP.  When I try to access the network from her laptop I am able to see the network (HOMENET) and see her shared documents folder.  However, when I try to do the same on my laptop I see the network but when I click on the network name HOMENET I receive a message stating "HOMENET is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."  I've checked Norton Internet Security on both machines to ensure the firewall is not blocking file and printer sharing and I've turned off Windows firewall.  Something else is blocking my access to this network and I cannot understand what it is and how to fix it.  Please help this layman.

P.S.: I need to use admin-privileged accounts for access to work at all.  Anything less and "Access is denied" or other errors.

Setup: I have a network of three computers (A, B, C). A and B can see each other via "show workgroup computers"; C can't even see itself via "show workgroup computers".

Any idea what's wrong?

Account? My version of XP apparently only has one account set up. (It even bypasses the initial login screen.)

And what's Trend?

I believe I am the one that started this issuea week or so ago. The Subject Line is mine anyway. I am still dead in the water. Have tried all the suggestions that have come through the forum so far, 1)made sure McAfee was completely removed, 2) made sure I had no firewall in the way, 3)reset the TCP/IP stack. Nothing has worked so far. I still can see my new Dell521 shared FOLDERS on the network, but cannot open them.

Additionally, taking my Dell back to original ship condition is not an option for me. Already did that twice a week after I received it due to various other problems. Way too many hours invested and software loaded so far. This should be a simple issue and a slam dunk to resolve. Obviously not and VERY frustrating. This is the first Dell PC I have bought in over 3 years and am pretty disappointed that this problem even exists. Seems to me it must be something to do with how Dell installed the OS? At least that is the reading I am getting from a friend who is both Cisco and MS certified (he is not XP certified though).
Still looking for help.

Hello everyone,

I'm also searching for help with some network issues. I have recently replaced my old PC system by a XPS M1710.
My PC (XP Pro SP2; Norton Internet Security 2004) was connected by a wireless network with my wifes' Acer Travelmate 230 (XP Home SP2, NIS 2004) and I could create that network just by using the Windows assistant for wireless network.
When my XPS arrived (XP Media Center 2005 SP2), I upgraded Norton to NIS 2007 on the Acer and installed it also on the Dell. I run the assistant for wireless network in order to connect the two portables and at the end of the installation I received a message that there had been a problem and the network might not work properly. I disabled on both portables the Norton firewall and repeated the procedure -> same result.
So for starters, I tried to create a classic network by using a wire on the Ethernet ports and received (with and without Norton firewall enabled) the message "limited or no connectivity". On the Microsoft homepage they advise to install a patch to resolve that problem ->no result.
When I try to view the network computers I don't even get access to MSHOME (MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have the permission to use this network resource). With the Acer I can access to MSHOME, but only the Acer appears.
Finally, I tried to create a network (wireless and classic) between the Dell and an Asus of a friend of mine who is using an AV and Firewall from his internet provider instead of Norton and I got exactly the same results.

Does anyone have suggestions how I can at least create a classic network? Please tell me if you need more detailed information.

You Can Try Enabling File And Printing Sharing On Your Wife's System since it migh be that file and rinter sharing is not enabled on that other system.so you are able to see the system but not access it.

Thank you for your quick response. File and Printer sharing are enabled on both systems, I enabled them every time I run the assisstant either for wireless or normal networks.
Maybe I should precise what is happening on the Dell: when I go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet connections -> My network places -> View Workgroup Computers, after waiting for 30 seconds I already get an error message by clicking on My network places saying that MSHOME is not accessible. The Icon for MSHOME is not even shown in the new window.
When I follow the same path on the system of my wife, I get the Icon for MSHOME and when I open it, only the computer of my wife is shown and all of her shared folders are accessible.
The error message at the end of the wireless network assistant is:
ERROR - Microsoft Windows XP - HERMY (this computer, Depending on the wireless software running on this computer, the Wireless Network Setup Wizard might not work. For details, see article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on Microsoft.com.)
Microsoft Windows XP - BÉA (Computer)

Hurray, a first small victory. In order to provide you this error message, I just run for the x time the wireless wizard and this time on my wifes system I can finally see the Dell. I don't get access to it and when I go to View Workgroup Computers on the Dell, it still doesn't want to show me the icon for MSHOME.

Any more suggestions?

It's finally been easier than I thought. It has been Norton Internet Security 2007 that has caused all that trouble, but only on the Dell. Probably when I upgraded from NIS 2004 on my wifes system, it kept the wireless network configuration in the firewall.
In fact, I can only access on the Dell to the network computers by completely disabeling the Norton firewall. And then I get access from the Dell to the Acer and from the Acer to the Dell.
What I did differently this time during the installation of the wireless network was: the assistant asks you to enter your USB device, than to insert it in the router and all computers you want to add to the network and to finally insert it again in the computer on wich you launched the assistant and to click next. This time, I started the assistant on the Dell, put it than in the Acer and than put it back in the Dell. Instead of just clicking on Next, accidently (it's 10am in the morning here in sunny south of France and New Years Eve party has finished only 4 hours ago) when Windows opened the content of the USB stick I clicked once again on install wireless network on this computer before clicking on Next in the assistant.
I will now have to find out how and where I have to configure Norton firewall the right way.

I wish you all a happy new year

This sounds like a firewall problem. Please disable the firewall on all systems and see if you can connect. Also, you can only have one firewall per system, so if you have Norton and McAfee you should remove one or if you have Norton and Windows firewalls again you can have only one. But until you figure out if it's the firewall or not turn them all off. Here is some additional help on how to set up networks.
