problems accessing shared files

Question

after setting up my new laptop via the network connection wizard, I can see all the files and folders and access the internet. However, with the two other desktops in the network (one is an old 98SE and the other a newer XP) I can only access the files on the older 98SE when clicking on an otherwise shared folder located on the XP computer I receive an error saying: '*insert folder name here* is not accessible. You may not have permissions to access this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have permissions Access is denied.'

The most likely cause of this is a firewall blocking local network access.  Either temporarily disable all third party firewalls, or configure them to properly allow local network access.   Steve

I tried shutting off my only firewall on that computer, the windows firewall, and it still gives me the same error. Now theres two subheaders on the network places folder, one says 'local network' and has all the shared folders from comp2 on it. The other says 'The internet'. Would a router have anything to do with it? The older computer I can access is the one which the router is installed upon. Thanks in advance.

Are you absolutely, positively, 100%, beyond all reasonable doubt sure that you have disabled all 3rd party firewalls (Norton, McAfee, Zone Alarm, etc.)?   Steve

yes. However, I did figure out what was happening. I was sharing folders on my account from my brothers. This allowed the folders to be seen on the network, but created the access denied error. Sharing them from my desktop solved the problem. Thanks for the help however! Still seems a little stupid to me that it would allow me to do that.
