problems ethernet/network card
Hi! My network card is not working, maybe it's not active or I don't actually have the software yet... I have the right opening on my computer but it was closed by one of those little plastic things, does that maybe mean that it's not activated? How do I go about activating the network card? Thanks for your help!

Which model computer do you have? If you go into Device Manager and expand the settings for Network Adapters, does an ethernet network card show up there?

To get into Device Manager, click on the icon for "My Computer" and select Properties from the drop-down menu. Then click on the Hardware tab and then on the Device Manager button. Next click the + sign next to Network Adapters. What devices are listed there?

So, do you actually have any network adapter physically installed on this computer?

That is an older model computer and in those the network card (to which the port you see on the outside connects to) was an add on MiniPCI combo card (Network card + modem). If there is no MiniPCI card, there is not network adapter. Open the MiniPCI card door on the bottom of your computer -

and see if there is a networrk card in there.
