Although it is not clear from your message, I assume that both computers are connecting through a wireless router (one wired and the other attempting a wireless connection).  If that is not the case, please let me know.

To help troubleshoot this problem, on the computer that is trying to make a wireless connection, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Your ipconfig output looks good.  You are getting an IP address from the router and the router appears to be getting valid IP addresses for the DNS server.  Is it possible that you changed a firewall setting somewhere that is preventing you from visiting internet sites?  Try temporarily disabling all firewalls (Windows XP firewall/Norton or McAfee firewalls).  If you have the Norton or McAfee firewalls, you may even have to temporarily uninstall these to get things to work.

Could you  then perhaps give me some hints about what kinds of settings you changed?  If you are not running Antivirus software, how do you know the problem is not being caused by a virus?

HELP!  With high speed cable internet access, I have one computer hardwired to a wireless router--no problems connecting!  My laptop is set up totally wireless with the router--no problems connecting!  I have just replaced a computer which I had set up as totally wireless as well with no problems; however, the new Dimension B110 has had nothing but problems and I need it to be totally wireless as well.  The latest c>ipconfig/all reads as follows:

Host name:Don (my husband); Primary Dns Suffix (blank); Node type: Hybrid; IPRouting enabled: No; WINS Proxy Enabled: No.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media state. . . Media disconnected; Description. . . Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection; Physical Address . . .: 00-13-20-C0-A0-A6.

Tunnel Adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface:  Connection--specific DNS Suffix (Blank); Description: Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface; Physical Address:FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF; Dhcp enabled: No; IPAddress. . . fe80::5445:5245:444f%5; Default Gateway (Blank); NetBIOS over Tcpip...Disabled.

There you have it.  In my order I received no "network cable"--why would I need one since the last computer had none and it worked fine--isn't it supposed to be "wireless"??  Also, I received no Windows XP CD.  Don't know if that would help me anyway.  My packing slip says I have an Integrated 10/100 Ethernet (Item #430-0441).  Do I need a different Network interface card??    Anyone have any suggestions??  Thank you for enduring my great lack of computer expertise, and if you give me advice, you will need to tell me every mouse stroke to make, as I am really computer challenged.  Would appreciate some patient soul out there who wouldn't mind sharing some of their vast knowledge or expertise with me.  Thanks so much:)!!

mollyb12,

Please note that it gets awfully confusing trying to help more than one person in the same thread.  This thread was started by DRMINE, and until the original problem is solved, I will reply only to DRMINE in this thread.  If you want help, please be considerate enough to start you own thread instead of replying to an existing thread.  I will tell you, however, that your ipconfig output shows that you do not have a wireless network adapter installed in that computer.  Without such and adapter there is no way that you will be able to connect to anything by wireless.  If you want further help, start a new thread by posting a new message instead of replying to an existing message.

My sincere apologies, Steve.  I am so new at this that I was not even aware that I was "butting
in."  Please excuse my lack of "forum finesse."  As I say, this is my first try at all of this plus understanding the technical issues.  Again, sorry and I do want to extend my apologies to DRMINE as well.  It was not my intent to be rude.

The setting I changed were all in the network connection properties.  There were the WEP enabled, the IEEE thing, I also tried to change something called Dome but then my connection would get dropped so I changed it back.  I changed the computer to computer, adhoc or any connectiong thing.  Mostly checked or uncheck things in this screens.  Hope I didn't mess things up totally.

thanks for your help

I did explore the possibility of a virus and have used spybot, adaware, and anitspyware and posted a hijack this log and several other instructions from this forum.  It was determined "clean".  Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help, this has been very frustrating.

Thanks again Steve!

You are not running antivirus software!  You ran antispyware software and determined that you don't have spyware.  Spyware and viruses are two totally different things.   How do you know you don't have a virus?????

Which virus software do you recommend, Norton or Mcafee? I run Windows XP.
I will get it and hope that is the problem.  I will try anything!

Thanks

I bought Norton Antivirus 2006, installed it and ran it twice.  There were viruses that were cleaned but there are 4 that say need to be reviewed.  Also I'm not able to get the updates because I'm still  not able to connect to the internet.

Is there any other way I can get the updates and install them?

Any suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks!
Debbie

Are you able to connect the computer to the dsl modem directly (i.e. using ethernet and without going through the router)?
