Installation of what? I have installed dsl (BellSouth) on two computers and installed no software. I don't know why Internet Explorer would close itself in any event, but can you try to install the dsl modem without adding any software? I would think you should be able to do this with SBC.
You apparently have a problem with the PC. I would suggest doing a Windows XP Repair (I assume you have XP) using your Windows XP installation CD. Repair will replace any corrupted or missing Operating System files and may fix the problems.
You can then continue on with your DSL installation. As noted you don't need to install the ISP software, but if you want it's OK as the ISP software should give you easy setup of your E-mail account, etc. I just recently helped a user setup SBC wireless DSL on a laptop and the software was needed to set up their user name, password, etc.
I've being trying to install dsl (sbc california) on my computer but the sbc's installation disk doesn't get past step 4 so I call sbc and thery had me open my internet explorer to type in the isp address but the explorer closes and never connects. You suggested trying to install the dsl modem without adding any software? How can I do this? Thanks, for all your help.
With either cable (Mediacom) or dsl (BellSouth) I have plugged in the modem and router, restarted the computer, modem and router and it worked. In the case of cable the first time I opened Internet Explorer it took me to a Mediacom registration page to register the equipment and bingo, it registered and it worked. I don't recall doing that for the BellSouth dsl, but even so, there was no software necessary. As to setting up the e-mail account, I did that through the outlook express mail account settings, which you will need to know but these are generally available on the web site or they will tell you if you call. For me it was quite simple and worked immediately with all four accounts.
I can't speak for SBC obviously. If they have you change settings and you still can't connect something is not right. Perhaps someone else here can explain why Internet Explorer would close on its own.
