hehe, I would say that the slot for the card not matching up is probably not a good thing. Look at using some other spots or removing a modem that you don't need anymore or something.
If it turns out that that PCI slot is OK, then try removing whatever it was that you installed and inserting the card first. When it looks for drivers "Have Disk it" to the CD that came w/the card .

What make and model of Wireless PCI card are you trying to install in the WIn 98 PC ?
You mention the D-Link router, but the not the card vendor/manufacturer...details please
