Problems Optliplex 280 GX (Broadcom-NIC) with RIS

Hello there,

I have a problem with our new Dell Optiplex 280 GX systems. We´re using a RIS based on Windows 2000 to create Images for other Workstations. We never had problems with this before, but since we have the 280´s the back-installation of an image always fails. I knew about the problems with the Broadcom NIC, so I´ve tried out all the solutions you can find in the message boards and FAQ´s from Broadcom, Dell and on the Web. But none of it did really work.
If you read the threads, some people say that it works and some say it doesn´t.
Maybe it depends on the configuration of the RIS?! On our RIS, we have two flat file images installed, the first is WinXP SP1 and the second WinXP SP2. First, I´ve always tried the solutions on the SP2 flat file, but later then always on both. Can this be the problem, having two flat file images on the same server? I hope somebody can help me!

Thx a lot!

Mathis

are they getting as far as picking up an IP address?

Hello Gary,

yes they ´re getting an IP-address. But shortly after the Windows Setup starts, I´m getting the error with the driver.
Additionaly I found out, that it is no problem to have multiple flat file Images on the same server.

Regards,

Mathis

I have an un-usual problem with GX 280's and RIS.

FOr the last 3 months have been using RIS to deliver an XP image to GX 280's Tower chassis and desktop chassis no problems. In the last week we received a new bunch of GX 280's and tried imaging them with RIS as normal and at the end of the image when the machine tries to join the domain it seems to fail.

Its not immediately obvious but there is a rather long delay when you see the automated config trying to join the machine to the domain.

When the machine has done its reboots and I go to Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to logon there is no domain prompt only a local machine prompt to logon locally.

Upon further examination of the network card I see Broadcom Extreme Network card says #2

I have looked at all parts of the motherboard and external and I can't see another NIC card. I am using the same (Latest Broadcom Extreme Driver) from the DELL Web Site.

Not sure if most people are aware that certain RIS Network settings are Adapter Specific and so won't work if the adapter does default to Adapter 01

I simply can't work this one out and even DELL support can't work it out.

Any help is much appreciated.

In \RemoteInstall\Setup\English\Images\WinXP_PRO_SP1\$oem$\$1\Drivers\Network\Onboard\B57XP32.inf on your RIS server, in the [Manufacturer] setting, change to %BRCM% = Broadcom.   2 sections later, change from the long string of the section header to [Broadcom].  That fixed my issue with RIS and WinXP.
