Problems setting up a home network

Hi

I recently switched from a D-Link LAN router to a TrueMobile 2300 wireless one for my home network. I have a Copaq desktop and a Dell Latitude laptop connected to the router. The desktop is connected with an Ethernet cable and the laptop with a wireless adapter.  Both computers run with XP. My internet connection works fine from both computers but I have problems getting the computers to communicate with each other - this worked just fine with my 'old' D-Link.

I can ping my laptop from my desktop but not vice versa and I cannot get file or printer sharing to work either way. I have verified that both File and Printer sharing and Microsoft Networking is activated on both computers and that TCP/IP is bound to both services. I have also verified that the XP Firewall functionality is turned off.

I have seen a few similar messages on this forum but I cannot seem to get anywhere with the responses posted to these problems. I hope someone has a new angle for me to try.

Thanks

Did file and printer sharing work on the old router?  Do you have any other software firewalls running?

Yes, file and printer sharing worked fine with my other router. I have Norton Internet security SW firewall on both computers as I did while using my old router. I haven't changed any settings in Norton since installing my 2300.

If your new router is using a different range of IP addresses than the old router and if Norton is configured to allow local network access on the old range of IP addresses, then this could be the problem.  Either reconfigure Norton or disable it until you are sure the local network is working.

It really was a SW firewall issue when I dug deep enough. Now I can at least connect to my laptop from my desktop. What still bothers me though, is that I can't ping my desktop from my laptop. I can't even ping the router from my laptop. Do you know any reason why I have this effect?

Thanks

What command are you typing to ping?  Have you tried completley disabling the firewall?

I just use 'ping 192.168.2.1' from the command prompt and yes I've tried disabling the firewall. I can ping servers outside my network without problem so the ping command in itself seems to work fine.

Try 2 things.   Run the home network setup wizard in winXp,  if you have not already done so,      And enable PnP on your router,  if it's an option in the router setup page.   Worked for me.

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately it didn't help. I reran the network configuration with no affect and I cab't seem to find any PnP settings on my router (can't even say I know what it is...)
