Problems with a VPN vs. wireless router

Objective - create a wired (ethernet) link from my work laptop to a wireless adsl modem / router so I can share by broadband connection via a wireless connection to my desktop PC.

 

Problem - My work laptop has a VPN installed and a lot of the internet connection settings have been 'locked down' so although I can connect the router to the laptop and the laptop knows it is there I cannot talk to the router to get it configured.

 

Any ideas / are there other ways of sharing an adsl connection?
