Problems with IP ADDRESSES

PLEASE HELP ME OUT
am a student studying in the netherland from africa and have a problem with my labtop.
I scaned the Network Diagnostics and it failed for the network adapters . It said DCHPServer=255.255.255.255(Invalid IP address) and also
IP Address = 169.254.29.140 (FAILED)
This make it impossible for me to use my wireless connection for peer to peer connectivity.
I have a P4 dell inspirion 5160.
Please I don't know what to do could you pls help me?

If the network that you are using, has a wireless router, it usually has an integrated DHCP server which should assign an IP-address to your computer as soon as you connect to the network. In that case, your network adapter (wireless or wired) would need to be set to "obtain IP-address automatically".
 
If the network is an ad-hoc type peer-to-peer wireless and without a DHCP-server, you will need to configure manually a fixed IP-address in your adapter settings. Find out if there is a server/router in the network and contact the server administrator for the settings to use.
