First, since you cannot see your wireless signal, that gives me a clue that your SSID is hidden. Try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings and see what happens.
I have followed the steps in your Recommended Wireless Router \settings note
I have attempted to upgrade my router firmware but this failed. I cannot seem to access the internet on my desktop at all now (either wirelessly or wired)
I am not sure what 'Broadcast SSID' means?
Security is WPA-PSK [TKIP]
Mode is b and g (n is not available)
Channel is 11
My laptop continues to operate wirelessly without problems
A few things; the first might be a silly question, but I've seen it fix the problem before.
Is the radio enabled on your wireless adapter? I'm not sure how the Belkin does it, but usually it is an option in the wireless utility that installs with the driver.
Have you compared wireless configuration between the computer that works and the computer that doesn't? Both should be configured exactly the same.
Is MAC address filtering enabled on your router? If so, you'll have to add the wireless adapter for the desktop before it will connect.
Does your firewall on the desktop "trust" your router?
2 i have compared the data within the 192.168.1.1 screens for both the laptop and the desktop and they are both the same
3 not sure how i check this
4 i have norton 2009 - i think i have told norton to connect to my router but i am not toally convinved this is working properly
i have also tried using the windows to configure the wireless connection (instead of belikn) but this does not seem to work (it keeps reverting to disabled)
Reverting to belkin as my utility, i can now 'see' my network listed (I had to correct the network name listed in Belkin) as available when i click the belkin utility (bottom rhs of screen) but the main belkin utility does not show a wirless connection
I suspect this might be to do with Norton since when i look at the scanning 'history' it lists instances of attempting to connect to the internet, which presumably means it has blocked each attempt. I need to do some more research into this (see 4 above). Any thoughts gratefully received

riverhill7,
Start, run or hit the Windows Key and the R Key at the same time. Type
CMD
hit enter. Now type
ipconfig /all (space between the g and / )
hit enter. Now look for the Default Gateway(should look something like 192.168.1.1). Put the in the address bar of your browser.
You should then get a login prompt. Depending on the router, usernames and passwords vary.
Username=admin
password=(blank, type nothing at all) admin, or if you changed this you'll need to enter your password.

riverhill,
Did you turn everything off, modem, router, computers wait 30 seconds, then turn everything back on?

I did not at the time, I have just now, computer, router then modem in that order, then powerup in reverse waiting two minutes between each
Still no wireless signal on the desktop, but I still have a wired internet connection
