"not responding" sometimes is a temporary condition which clears itself up eventually (but not always)
Does your PC have 512 MB RAM? more? how much?
Can you get to Task Manager? Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose the Task Manager button
I would STOP + disable three or four services:
* Computer Browser
* DNS
* Messenger
* IPSec (set to Manual)

Hi there, I found out I have 128 MB of Ram.  I also found out that this was probably my problem as I have 2.66 gh, and only 128 of ram.  Is this right?  Thanks for replying.  Yes I do get to the task manager and I do "get out of" as many programs as possible.

Microsoft claimed 128 MB would run Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP but my opinion is that 256 MB (still sold) is woefully adequate and 512 MB (we are finding) is problematical. Personally I would go no less than 1024 MB (1 GB) for Windows XP Pro and Office 2003.
Are you running Windows Me? Windows 98 SE?
If it is XP, then what is the model (and brand) of the PC?

I am not sure what "goes up" means
Are you wanting to get rid of it now?
What is the name of the online poker
What URL ?

Hi there again,  my computer is running...Windows xp home edition, version 2002, service pak 1.  Now I know I can update to service pak 2, but when I do that (download the updates) I have problems with my printer, copier, scanner.  So, to just have problems with this "program not responding" window is better than having issues with my printer.  But it would be nice to not have any problems at all!!

You can eliminate unwanted services as follows:
RIGHT-click "My Computer" and select Manage
expand "Services and something"
expand "Services"
For each of the following, use RIGHT-click to change to "Disable" and to STOP the service
* Computer Browser
* DNS
* Messenger
* IPsec (in this case, "Manual" rather than "Disable"
I have have "not responding" with certain combinations of programs.
If you use Microsoft Outlook (NOT Express) then go to Tools | Options and UNCHECK "Use Word to edit email"
The other programs that have caused me problems in combination are Adobe (Acrobat, especially Professional) and particularly some AOL versions. Do you run AOL. If you do not use AOL and it is installed on the PC then I would used Add/Remove programs to take it away. While there, I would look carefully to see what other programs you might be able to live without.
Are you running Symantec (Norton) Internet Security?
McAfee?

Hi and thanks again.  I will try these things and or see if any of them are listed.  What I know for sure is I use Internet Explorer - no AOL.  And I will check on that Norton and Mcafee.

One question tho, What does it do when I disable the computer browser, this" DNS", Messenger and this "IPsec"?  Will that interfere with anything else I'm using?  Just wondering...I don't want to make any other headaches down the line.

Thanks again for all your help, I can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel with all of this.

Messenger is not required
IPsec has not caused problems on our campus
DNS is provided by your ISP and so you should never need to be running it.
Computer Browser is a cause of problems when it is running in a "Domain"
We turn all these off on every XP computer immediately when we first set up a new system.

Inside "My Computer" do a RIGHT-click on drive C: and choose properties.
What is the free space (value)?
Total space value?

Hi again, The messenger was off, and I stopped the other 3.  Used space, 3.49 gb,  Free Space, 33.7 gb, for a total of 37.2.  I hope this is the info you wanted.

I do not know whether you run "defrag" on weekly basis.
The benefit of doing this may be negligible but I think it cannot hurt.
To "defrag" do a RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and choose "Manage"
Then look for the "defrag" icon and click into it.
Make sure the highlighted partition is your 37 GB one and then click the button "Defrag now"
You probably want to start a defrag when you can leave the PC alone for awhile (over lunch or over night, as examples).

Hi, No I have never done that.  This is something that might help the "cause"?

Everything else I have tried that you have suggested, so I will try this too.  But you know, I'm still having the problem, (not quite as often I might add, but its still annoying when it does)  -  so I suppose I should just break down and buy some more memory for this comp, huh?

There IS one other thing in addition to running the defrag.
By default (in my experience) the hard drive is set to "allow indexing"
I would turn that off.
Find drive C: in "My Computer"
RIGHT-click drive C: (Local Drive) and choose Properties.
You should see a check box with an x in it saying "Allow Indexing"
Click to CLEAR that checkbox. It will ask whether to apply to this and all sub-folders and that is the option you want.
It may take awhile to "Apply" this change.
Defrag will help, especially if you have never do the defrag.
One other thing. When you look at the defrag, check to make sure the drive does NOT say FAT32. It should be "NTFS"
Defrag would be good to run once a week. Earlier versions of Windows could go a month (or several) but NTFS benefits from more frequent maintenance, in my opinion.
I support 18 computer Lab systems plus dozens (more than a hundred) computers for employees and graduate students (since 1997).
