Proset Wireless Problem Saving Profiles

I have an Inspiron 9400/E1705 and I'm having serious issues with the Intel Proset software.  The wireless card is the Intel 3945.  For some reason, the software will not save network profiles.  I'll boot up the laptop and it will connect to a network for a second (the icon turns green showing it's connected), and then the wireless connection is dropped.  I then get a message stating that wireless networks are available, but I have to manually connect to one.  I've saved the profiles and the settings are correct, but I can't figure out why the wireless card will not connect automatically.  I've gone through the setup of each profile, and the network I want to use has a setting where the wireless card will connect to that particular network by default automatically, but it still doesn't.  In fact, when I reboot, the two profiles I've setup are even there.

I've uninstalled and re-installed Proset hoping that would help, but it still doesn't save the profiles.

Once I select a network and type in the password, the connection is fine.  When I switch to using Windows to manage the wireless connections, I don't have any problems.  Is there a performance difference between using Windows XP Pro and using Intel Proset?  (I mean when Proset is working, that is).  If both were working without any issues, which one would be better to manage the wireless connections?

Does anyone have any ideas?  I would sure appreciate your input.

My personal rule for myself is use the one that works. I would use Windows. My support is for dozens (hundreds?) of students and employees in graduate school and when something works, I move on.
