PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A protocol support?

I recently bought Inspiron 8600 which came with the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter.  Now, this is probably a stupid question but with which of the 802.11 standards is the above compatible?  Will it work on 802.11g and if not, what would other members recommend as a good and inexpensive solution?

Thanks.

Michael

Michael,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

A quick look at your system profile showed that there is an Intel Pro 2100 802.11B card installed in your system.  The 802.11B standard came out before the G standard, so the card is incapable of supporting 802.11g speeds.  You will need to look for a USB, PCMCIA, or 1394 solution if these exist.

Higher standards support lower standards, but not the other way because the newer standards did not exist.

Hi Bob:

Thank you for the reply.  I looked under the Device Manager and the only relevant card I have is "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter".  It doesn't say which 802.11x standards it supports.  Is this the same card you found on my system?

I am looking to set up a wireless network and am getting a router which will support all 802.11 standards up to G.  Am I correct in assuming that the card I have (Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI Adapter) will be all right so long as I am happy to put up with 802.11b standard?

Thanks again.

Michael

The 2100 is a "b" standard card - since it is mini-PCI, you can use any mini-PCI wireless card with U.FL connectors for the antennas (almost 100% of available bare cards have this) in your notebook.
