PXE Error PXE-E61

I have an OptiPlex GX1, that I'm trying to get to boot remotely using PXE. PXE was working fine, and then I tried booting from a floppy for troubleshooting purposes. Now when I boot using PXE, I get the following error.

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE

I know the cable is not faulty. I can boot over the network froma floppy, and I can boot from the local disk and use the network just fine. I suspect that the PXE got hosed when booting from the floppy somehow. Is there ayway to fix this? Can I upgrade or flash PXE? I have PXE 0.99n

I have the same error message when trying to boot with PXE. I hit F1 and only then does it work. But that's NOT functional. If I have to hit F1 on every X term in here I'll be doing only that all day.

We have 45 Optiplex GXa 300L EM+.
Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A10
3Com PXE, version 0.99j.02

EDIT: I have isolated the problem to this scenario : the Dells are plugged in Kingston 8 port EtheRx Pro-Series 10/100BASE-TX hubs, a Cisco 3550 switch or an Intel 550T switch, all capable of 100Mbit. In the 10/half only equipments, no problem. They have to work with the 10/100 hubs. If I buy Asanté or 3Com low-end switches, what guarantees do I have ?

During POST, the link is up at 100Mbit on the hub or switch.
Then PXE launches and the link goes down. The PXE error message appears (PXE-E61).
The link goes back up (at 10/half duplex only) immediately after the error message.
I "strike F1 to retry boot" and PXE boot proceeds.

I downloaded MBA v.4.30, but it's not for on-board NICs.
So I upgraded the BIOS to A10. No change.

Help !

I can confirm that the integrated NICs are not able to negociate with switches. It works on the second try only, and at 10/half...

That's right, only the Optiplex GXa 300 MHZ has the speed negociation issue.

The 233 and 266 models are fine.

Anyone ?

Good research people.

I have the same problem.

When forcing the Cisco switch to 10/half, everything is fine, but on auto/auto or 100/full, I have the error.

I guess the only solution is to force them to 10/half, to plug your Optiplex on old equipment or to buy some new hardware.
