Question about setting up a wireless network

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1705 laptop and planned to get rid of my current desktop setup.  I was thinking about setting up a wireless network so I could connect from anywhere in my home.  However, it appears from what I am reading that I still need to have a computer that is directly connected to the router with a network cable.  Is this correct?

You can use wireless laptops, but you will need an ethernet cable to so the initial setup.

it's not absolutely necessary but it's a good idea to have the option of connecting by cable available when needing to do stuff like updating the router's firmware or altering your security encryption.
