Reinstalled XP without Network Adapter

I reinstalled XP on my Dimension 4550 last night, but the Network Adapter did not install.  I've installed the drivers for Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet NIC multiple times without any luck.  I read a previous thread that indicated the chipset drivers would need to be installed first.

A couple of questions:
1. Where would I find the chipset drivers?  XP Installation disk?  Drivers Support disk? Download from Dell Website?
2. Do I need to reinstall XP again, then figure out how to install the chipset drivers, then install the network adapter drivers?
3. Am I missing anything else?

Thanks,
Curtis

The chipset drivers can be found on the CD or on the Dell download site:

Since the chipset drivers should always be the first drivers installed, you may be able to get away with installing them now, then attempting to install the drivers for the network adapter.  Sometimes you have to uninstall all of the other drivers that were installed before the chipset drivers were installed, then install the chipset drivers and then the other drivers.  Other times it is best to start over completely.

OK.  Thanks. I'll give it a shot...

I installed the chipset drivers then reinstalled the network adapter drivers---no luck.  I then reinstalled XP.  Before using the Resource disk to install any drivers, I installed the chipset drivers and then the network adapter drivers I downloaded from the Dell website.  Still no network adapter listed.  I then ran the Resource disk.  Still no network adapter listed.  I've tried drivers from both the Resource disk as well as the from the Dell website.  Nothing seems to work, yet all was fine before I reinstalled XP.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Curtis

Is the network adapter disabled in the BIOS?

The Network Adapter is enabled in the BIOS.  The hardware is found, but the drivers need to be installed.  When I attempt to install the drivers from the Dell website or the Resource disk, the Installshield launches, it goes through a few instances of copying files all the way up to when the DOS window pops up for a second and then both the DOS window and the windows installshield window close.  In never says that the installation has completed and never asks me to restart the computer.

Do you know which ethernet network adapter you have in your machine?   It could be either a Broadcom Gigabit adapter or an Intel 10/100.  If you are not downloading and attempting to install the correct drivers for your network adapter, it will not work.   If you are not sure which one you have, go to the following site, enter your Service Tag number, then click on the Original Configuration tab to see a list of the original componenets.    See if you can decipher this list and determine which network adapter you have, then download the correct drivers.

The Intell drivers were already installed, but it still wasn 't working. I uninstalled them, then reinstalled them.  All is good now.  I guess the Broadcom isn't functional...  Thanks for all of your help.  I really appreciate it.  You guys are awesome....
