reinstalling NIC driver for Windows XP

I reinstalled the Windows XP operating system but can't reconnect to the internet because it says the NIC driver for Windows XP needs installed.  I followed the instructions and when I right click on Network Adapters, click properties, click driver then I am suppose to see "Update Driver" but I don't.  Any help on getting the correct driver installed.  Thanks.

ok my friend, put the dimension resource cd, then look for the NIC driver, then double click on that one, then click on extract, then click on continue, ok this is the most important thing, you´ll see a little window telling you if you want to extract the file to this folder, C:dell\driver\r****, ok please you need to writte down in a paper the location of the folder, the R**** (of course you wont see stars, you´ll see numbers) is your NIC folder driver, then click on ok and then you´ll see that it needs to create it so click yes, then you´ll see all files were succesfully unzipped, so click ok, then if the driver installation doesn´t start by it self you do this,

right click on start button, click on manage , that is going to open the computer managment, look for device manager, then you´ll see the ethernet controller or network adapter, give a right click on that, and click on update driver, then you´ll see the update driver wizard, so you go to the bottom and click on the second option that is the advaced one, ok here is the most important thing, you´ll see the four options in the next window click on the first three ones, then you´ll see a little button that says browse, click on that and is going to show you another widow, look for the hard drive (local disk C) and then you´ll see a plus sign , please click on the plus sign and look for a folde that says DELL, then look for the folder that says DRIVERS and then look for the R*** (that´s why you need to writte down the folder while unzipping from resource cd) then click on the plus sign and then look for a folder that says WINXP or WINDOWSXP, click on the folder and then click ok, now click on next and then you´ll see the installation wizard and follow the instruction, click on next or ok or yes to all the options and that´s it,

I know that looks pretty long but print this down and follow it, and you´ll see that is pretty easy.

if you need more assistance let me know or if not send me an email to miguelforgiven@gmail.com

Thanks.  Worked perfectly.  I am having problems setting my screen resolution after downloading SP2.  I went to control panel, performance and maintenance, system display, and monitor and my only two choices were 800 x 600, and 600 x 480.  Under change screen resolution it will not let me drag the setting.  Am I missing a driver?

hey, give a right click on my computer, then you`ll see a menu, click on manage and that is going to open computer management, then look for device manager and click on that, on your right hand side you´ll see the devices, look for a yellow question mark and if you see yellow question marks is because you`re missing drivers. let me know if you see them and let me know what does it say next to the question mark, I ´ll help you to download the drivers if you need them, take care

ahhh and if you want to change resolution just give a right click on the desktop and then look for the properties option that is going to open the display properties, look for setting and there you´ll see the resolution , it´s faster than going to control panel, but first let me know if you are missing drivers from device manager

I still am not able to change my screen resolution.  I had two devices with the yellow question mark.  They were "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" and "Scan".  I tried installing the Video Controller using the directions you gave me to install the NIC driver.  When I got to the installation wizard I got an error and it was unable to complete the installation.  Then I looked under devices again and it moved the "Video Controller" device under "Display Adapters".  It had a blue computer box with a yellow exclamation point.  I guess until I get the Video Controller device installed I will not be able to change my screen resolution.  Thanks.

ok, great this is what you need to do, connect to support.dell.com, look for popular support tools , type your service tag (only the service tag, don´t look for your system) then you´ll see at the bottom drivers and downloads, click on go and it will show you the drivers and downloads page, then look on your left hand side for **find downloads** that will show you all the drivers, the last one is for the video, then click on that and it will show you the video drivers look for the one that you have, and click on that, then click on download now and then you´ll see the download window, click on run or open but not on save, and you´ll see the sames steps from the resource cd, follow the steps and you´ll install the driver succesfully. if you need more help let me know ahh and if you don´t know the type of video card that you have, look for the original configuration under popular support tools (( the first step instead to look for drivers and downloads click on the drop down menu and look for original system configuration that´ll show you the type of video card that you have)) if you need more assistance let me know

Your instructions were correct.  I downloaded the driver from the Dell website and it automatically installed.  Thanks again.  By the way do you know what the Java updates are.  When I start up my computer I get this message in the bottom righthand corner asking me if I want to download the Java updates or install later.
