REMOTE ACCESS FROM LAPTOP TO DESKTOP?

I was able to set up my wireless network easy enough. I am sharing an internet connection between my hard wired desktop and my wireless laptop, but I cannot figure out how to share files between the two computers. Can anyone give me advice?

On each computer, open Network Connections, right click the network connection over which you want to share files and select Properties form the drop down menu.   Make sure that the box next to File and Printer Sharing is checked.  Then, open My Computer or Windows Exploler, right click the drive or folder that you want to share on the network and select Sharing from the drop-down menu.   Finally, make sure that whatever firewall you are running is configured to allow local network access.  The shared drive or folder should then show up in My Network Places, My Computer, and Windows Explorer.

I have the same problem.  My dell came with MacAfee firewall.  I've tried to configure firewall to allow access.  My laptop is an IBM Think pad.  When I try and access my homenetwork from the laptop it says it is not accessible and that I may not have permssion to use this network resouce.  Any Help? Thanks.

This is so frustrating. I have done everything that I can think of. I don't see why I would be able to access the internet and nothing else. I have experimented with different things and I probably only made the situation worse. I named my desktop "desktop", then I named my laptop "laptop". I cannot even find the name of my network on my Desktop. All I see on my desktop is...the files on my desktop! I see the connections. I am connected using my IntelPROSET/wireless. The only other thing I see is a little icon that says "Local Area Network. A network cable is unplugged." I don't see how that could matter, being that I am using a wireless connection. When I click on it it shows this: Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. Whatever that is, it doesn't seem to be working. I suspect that may have something to do with my problem, but I have no idea. Why didn't I get the 30 day Dell On Call?

The cable unplugged message has to do with the Broadcom controller.  That is your ethernet network adapter, and if you don't have it plugged into anything, then it is unplugged.  Since you are trying to connect with wireless, it has nothing to do with your problem.  I am 99.99% sure that your problem is because you have not configured your firewall to allow the local network traffic.
