Remote Desktop

I am trying to establish a remote desktop connection to a desktop running XP Pro from a laptop running XP Home.  The computers are on a home network, controlled by a router.  I have followed all the steps suggested by Windows Help (I think), to no avail.  Can anyone offer any suggestions, or cite experience with trying to use this feature?

Thanks.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough in my original posting.  I want to use the laptop to connect to another computer via the Remote Desktop Connection feature.  The laptop runs XP Home.  The Desktop runs XP Pro.  Remote Desktop is an available feature on XP Home, when used to connect to a computer running XP Pro.  On my XP Home laptop, RDC is available via Start/All Programs/Accessories/Communications/Remote Desktop Connection.  My problem is that I can't establish the connection from the laptop to the desktop despite my supposedly doing all the steps/suggestions in the help articles on the feature.

Thanks.

jlmurphy,

While it is true that Remote Desktop is only available in WinXP Pro, any Windows version from Win95 up can be a Remote Desktop Client.  See this MSKB article.

However, you may want to try UltraVNC instead of Remote Desktop.  Much easier to install and use than Remote Desktop and supports any Windows OS for both server and viewer.  It is available for free download here.

Thanks, Paladin.  I'll give it a look.

Here's how I nnect to my XP Pro PC from my wife's XP Home on my home network.

Right-click on 'My Computer' and selcect properties.

Select the Remote tab and be sure that 'Allow users to connect to this computer' is checked at the bottom.

If you click on 'Select Remote Users', you should see that the current user (that you are logged into the XP Pro PC as) is listed as 'userxxx already has access'.  This is the username and password that you will need to login to from the XP Home PC.

You can also add a another desktop user but it will need to be 1st setup as a regular account on the XP Pro PC.

You will need to know the computer name or IP address of the XP Pro PC to be able to connect.  On the XP Pro PC, type IPCONFIG from a command window and it will give you the IP address of the XP Pro PC.

On the XP Home PC, then bring up the RDC and enter the IP address for the Computer: , enter the user name and password (FROM THE XP Pro PC) and press connect.

That would work.  And I will amend my previous post by saying that at least the "host" machine must be running either 2K or XP Pro.

Thanks for the help.  I'll give it a try, and see if it finally makes the connection.
