renewing interface LAN error

Question

I have a Dell dimension 4600, Windows XP Home. I had a problem with service pack 2 installation and I repaired windows with the WinXP CD. But now I can't access the internet through my LAN. The provider's technician tried to renew the IP configuration but I get a message saying an error occurred while renewing interface LAN: an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket. Can anyone help please?
