Replacing and troubleshooting a blown Ethernet Card

I just realized I have blown my ethernet card by plugging in the phone line.  I am wondering if there is anything I can do to repair and fix the port before I invest in a pcmcia card.  (yes, even the most tech competent makes stupid mistakes)

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

The built-in ethernet port on the 8200 is on the motherboard.  If you are in warranty have it replaced.  If not, disable it in the BIOS and buy your PCMCIA card.

Thank you for the quick reply.  Unfortunately I just tried a USB type ethernet card and it doesn't work after disabling the NIC and reinstalling the entire OS.  I may get a pcmcia version but I have a feeling that it may not work either...

Is there something much more serious and is the actual controller that maintains all ethernet I/O busted?  Is there such a thing???

No that is not true.  You should not have had to reinstall the entire OS.  If it was XP, you need at least SP1 for USB support.  A PCMCIA solution will be better as it won't have the USB quirks of recognition usual with that interface (especially if you standby).

Dear John,

I have a very very happy conclusion! It's apparent that my ethernet card is a ok and the only problem was that the cable modem was not reset! I feel very silly! I found this out about 2 weeks ago . :) I checked my mail and found that you've replied. Thank you! :) I'm very happy that it was simply a cable modem issue.
