I left the modem inside the PC. Went into systems, then sevice manager and disabled the PCI. This worked, I thought, but when I turned the computer back on the next day, it reinstalled the modem again. How do I get this turned off?? I went into ( add and remove programs) but this wasn't listed there. Each day I turned on the PC, and have to uninstall it again. HELP!! This was factory installed, does that make a difference?
I have been working all afternoon trying to solve the same problem. That is, I disable my PCI modem in the device manager and uninstall it in the add/remove programs. I shut down, connect the external modem and reboot. The first thing I see is windows has detected my PCI modem and installs the drivers. I finally just restored everything to 6 hours ago and gave up.
Can I just leave both enabled and installed and pick the one I want to use. Seems like a hassle. I had no problems with the same situation on my Win98SE PC. But, I do remember I had to disable something else (I don't remember what) in order for the internal modem to stay disabled. Is there something else that has to be disabled?
Go into Device Manager\Modem and disable the modem. Technically, you can go into the Dial Up property, select the modem you want to use, and dial-out. I have a software-based Conexant modem and a USR 5610B hardware-based modem. Both modems are active. I just go into Network Connection, click the DUN account\properties and choose the modem that I want to use to dial out. You can also set up two different DUN accounts...one for each modem.
