Router Connection Problem
Okay - I have an Inspiron 9200 and bought a Netgear wrg614v5 router.
I have broadband and the ethernet card works no problem. I connect the router and go through the startup process - broadband modem, wait, then router, wait then computer. The I cant get the computer to access the router - i have tried ping to the router but it just times out. I set the IP address manually as 192.168.1.2 and the gatewaty as what is on the router 192.168.1.1 but still no ping. I cant even access the router to change any settings.
In addition I brought the router into work today and it connected no problem to this desktop computer using the same cables as I am trying at home. Any suggestions.
I have tried all the ports on the router - the ethernet card is blinking and works fine directly with the broadband modem - the cable seems to be fine> What else can I try?

Sounds like a bad router to me. Take it back and get another one.

on the laptop (dell inspiron) no communication via any port.
In work on the desktop the software immediately fired up and let me access the router settings - I can't get that far with the leptop though.

Do you think it might be ethernet card driver?

Since it connects directly to other ethernet networks and you seem to have eliminated the cable and ethernet card as the problem, I would suspect a bad router. You mentioned that you tried manually assigning the ip address and gateway, so I assume you also tried letting it obtain an IP address automatically. Did you try other router ports?

There is some problem with the braodband modem and router together but i think this is in the setting up - so tonight i will reset the modem with the router now installed and reconfigure the broadband with router in place.
