Router help....I'm new

I have Earthlink DSL and I'm trying to install a router so my fiance can use his computer also.  I installed everything as specified and when it goes through the system checks it asks me for my email address and password-no problem, but at the end when it tries to connect it can't.  I should also mention that I can access my Earthlink homepage (not email) through Internet Explorer (I can't access my task panel nor email because the router is connected)...  I'm very confused-and new to this, so I need answers in plain English please............thanks for any and all help.

I'm not sure what you mean by this statement - "I can't access my task panel nor email because the router is connected".  What task panel can you not access?  Which program are using for email?  Have you set up your email account to use the server addresses specified by Earthlink or are you still using the settings for your old dial-up connection?  Which version of Windows are you running?

Thanks for answering......First-the Earthlink 'task panel' is above the browser and that is how I connect to the internet, email, toolbox etc...if I use the browser to access my email I am sent to my webmail instead.  This is the problem, when I hook up the router and click on the icon to sign in it won't let me(their 'task panel').    For my email I'm using Earthlinks Total access mailbox.  I have had them since day one (about 5 years) and they had to help config. when I went to DSL (their modem).   I am running XP again(old pc had Vista-hated it but that's another story...lol) Thought of calling Earthlink for help but they want an extra 7.95 a month for the 'privilege' of home networking.   Thanks again,

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I have never seen this Earthlink software and have no idea how it works.   I did find a tutorial on the Task Panel at:

http://support.earthlink.net/tutorial/ta/earthlink/

that may be useful to you.  Otherwise, all I can suggest is to wait and see if someone familiar with this software answers your post.  Alternatively, you could start a new thread, making it clear in the Message Subject that you are dealing with the proprietary Earthlink software.

If you are installing the router, did you go into the router's setup and set it up for PPoE and add your user name and password? - I'm guessing you did, since you say you can connect.

The router takes the place of the PC for this step. When my friend had AOL DSL, I had to make a seperate username/password just for the router, that way they could use their username/password to get their email (since it wasn't tied up in the router).

Not sure if Earthlink has this same limitation, just a thought.
