Change the password of the router using the routers built in web server page. Not knowing the manufacturer of your router makes it hard to know the IP address of server setup page. If you post back the name of your router it will be easier to help.
Hello - and thankyou Inspiron. My router is a netgear, I did type in the IP address thing, but I can't see where I must have originally (probably with help from the broadband providers help team at the time) put in the password they supplied. When I connect on this machine (the desktop), I just double click on the internet explorer icon and am automatically connected. I don't type in a password or click on a 'connect' word to access the net, and have become a bit disorientated with it all. Thankyou again for any help you can give - sheila
Because you only have to click on Internet Explorer and you allready on the net is because your settings are set for the computer to connect automatically to the router when the computer is started. This is the best way to have it, its a lot quicker than going to your connections and clicking connect.
Thankyou, at least thats one thing explained - given that the settings mean the pc connects automatically to the router, how will I be able to change the password (when my new provider passes it on to me)? Will it be through that 192. thingy?
Yes to change your password when your new ISP gives it to you go to
http://192.168.0.1 . You will be prompted with a username and password screen. Here is the username and passwords. Different models have different username and passwords
Username: admin
Passowrd: password
If the above doesn't work try:
Username: admin
Password: admin
If they both don't work reply back with the model of your router.
Thankyou Inspiron - the changeover is due on 17th May (dreading it already!) so hopefully will be able to sort it all out then. Will let you know one way or another - I appreciate your help as I'm fine jogging along with technology, but get jittery when I have to change or mess around with anything thats been working ok. be in touch again then - again, thankyou very much - sheila
Hi Inspiron - have to say its been a nightmare. I have tried to get back to you, but have been off the internet altogether since 21st May. Changeover seemed to go smoothly, lost the phone for about 4 hours, the net seemed to work intermittently on the Friday, then went out altogether. The actual password change (thanks to your help) went very well, I was really pleased with myself! However, even though my pc and the laptop
said we were connected, you couldnt get to explorer or e-mails. I have spent ages with the help people from my provider, they say the card at the exchange needed to be reset which was finally done and I got on line yesterday evening. They are trying now to make the connection faster (something to do with being on the lowest protocol, whatever that means - to try and keep the connection stable). We are also having to try to re-route the router so it can be plugged into a different phone socket, so carpet is up, floorboard is up and we are now on a telephone extension thing! I just dread going to the pc and trying it, in case it gives up the ghost again! So far today it has been pretty good, the laptop has dropped connection a few times, but picks up again later - the help people told me thats probably to do with the laptops wireless inbuilt thing, not the router (or them!). Hope they are being truthful, being technically challenged I have no way of knowing! Anyway, thankyou again very much for your help - and for your interest, makes me feel a bit 'safer'! Regards - sheila
