router problem

Hi

A few weeks ago, I purchased a wireless router for my home to allow internet access to another computer a few rooms away. It works fine, but now I can't host online games. The game itself loads up okay, but people cannot connect. It looks like the ports used to connect have been shut down.

I have Windows XP Home

The router is a LINKSYS 2.4ghz 54mb wireless (model WRT54G)

The modem is a Motorolla SB51000

(don't think the other specs will effect this issue)

I belive the issue is with the hardware firewall. Now, I tried to bypass the router by simply disconnecting it and running my handy ethernet cable from the modem right to the computer, but then the computer stops talking to the modem and doesn't connect at all.

thanks

Have you installed SP2 since all this started happening?  If not, did you update the firmware or reset your router?  have you changed the default password for your router?

what abt a ICF firewall? WinXP automatically enables it in  network setup, and it WILL prevent your hosting, as well as file sharing and print sharing.....well, if you go through a router it will. Disable ICF and try

Thanks!  I connected to the router using my browser at 192.168.1.1

Then I went to the Applications & Gaming tab and open whatever range of ports I needed for the games I  planed to host.  Oh well, I'm learning!
