router problem

I have tried 2 different brands of routers, and I am still having problems.  I use a cable modem, and each time I connect the router for the Inspirion lap top, within an hour or so, I can not connect to the internet, and get message " limited connectivity"  I contacted the cable company, went through some things with them.  At one point found that the IP address was missing, and had to reset that.  There seems to be a situation that when using the router, we lose the IP address.  Cable company says the modem is trying to communicate the computer, but something is happening along the way.   Would appreciate any and all help on this, as is annoying me not being able to use the router

The model Inspiron, operating system running and model of router would help us with this problem? Is the router wireless ethernet or just ethernet? Try connecting laptop directly to cable modem(bypass router). See if you still have the same symptoms to your problem? You will need to power cycle your network components after this configuration change.

Thanks for the response.  The laptop uses xp office as the o/s.  The router brand is Air Plus Xtreme G, wireliss router.  The connection is, cable wire to cable modem box, from there an ethernet cable to the lan input of the router, then another ethernet cable from  a wan output on the router to the ethernet connection input on the computer proicessor.  I have not tried to run router alone, but the desktop unit runs fine when no router is in.  When put the router in, within 30 mins or so, can not use internet, and get message stating connectivity problem, yet the cable light, power light, and pc light are steady, not blinking.

Thanks again for the help

Does your router have a setting that tries to obtain a new IP address every 30 minutes or so? My netgear router did, and it never successfully reestablished the connection, so I simply turned off that feature and have not had a problem since. Good luck.

Thank you very much for your reply.  The first modem we tried was a netgear, and when we had this problem, we returned that and bought this one.  Is this something we can do through the properties of the unit ?  It came with a set up CD, that directs you to an url to finalixe the set up, but we had ttouble with that to.  I am hesitant to reconnect, if in 30 min it will screw up my IP address, and I have to call the cable company again to reset.

The URL they most likely are directing you to is the router address itself, so it should be safe to get to. The setting you want to look for is typically named something like "Idle Timeout (in minutes)". To turn off this feature, you want to set it to "0" (zero) minutes. By default, routers are usually preconfigured to some other number (Netgear's is 5 minutes for example).

Thanks again for your help.  Called D Link, the router maker.  The installation instructions were nothing like what he had me do.  Now is running fine
