Satellite ISP & network

Wondering if anyone else uses satellite service.  I use Direcway as it is my only option for high speed access.  I just received my new Dell XPS and want to network my older Gateway desktop (Win XP pro) and Dell laptop (Win ME).  I purchased a Linksy wireless adaptor (g) for the laptop and Linksys (g) NIC for the Gateway.  I also purchased a Linksys (g) wireless router.  I have the new Direcway 6000, self-hosting, modem to receive my service.

Before I get started I wanted to ask if anyone has experiences, hints or suggestions regarding this sort of setup that they would like to share.  This is my first attempt at home networking.

MDR51,

Use the Advanced Forum Search and search Subject for "satellite."  There have been a few postings, but not too many.

Since you have the DW6000 system, connect the satellite modem directly to the Internet port on the WRT54G using a straight-through ethernet cable.  Each PC connects to the router either wired or wirelesly.  It is recommended that at least one PC connect to the router using a wired connection, so you can perform router firmware updates (wireless is not recommended) as well as configure the wireless settings in the router.  Turn off all the equipment and connect the router to the modem and one of the PCs to the router.  Then power up the modem and let it sync with DirecWay.  Next power up the router and let it sync with the modem.  Finally power up the PC(s).  All the PCs should be configured to Obtain an IP Address Automatically.  They will get private IP addresses from the router.  The router is getting a public IP address from DirecWay.

This is a link to the satellite forum at BroadBandReports.com.  Lots of good stuff there.

The tutorials here will help you configure File and Printer Sharing.

Thanks Paladin, I just got my XPS rig setup and my next task will be to setup the network.  Your info was very helpful and I will be checking out those links.  I'll let ya know if I run into any glitches that I can't figure out.
