error: one or more recipients of a message was not recognized by the server.
This error indicates that your ISP does not recognize an email recipient's e-mail address. This is an issue with your ISP. This usually means that an address is misspelled.
Outgoing server (SMTP) may require authtication. you can turn this on by checking the outgoing server checkbox in the accounts Setup settings
You should check with your ISP to resolve the above error message.

If you're using an address book entry for the e-mail recipient, it's likely that the address is entered wrong. For example, earthlink's SMTP server will let you send e-mail to other earthlink users as either:
okay, then. Have you recently changed the password on your earthlink account? If so, did you change the SMTP-auth password in your e-mail client? Or, has earthlink recently started requiring users to use SMTP auth?
As the mod said, contact earthlink tech support if none of this obvious stuff works.

If you're using an address book entry for the e-mail recipient, it's likely that the address is entered wrong. For example, earthlink's SMTP server will let you send e-mail to other earthlink users as either:
user@earthlink.net or just user
(meaning, it will append the @earthlink.net portion).
Check in your address book and make sure the address you're sending to includes the part after the @
