Separate DCs on same VLAN

Does anyone know why when you have 2 separate stand alone Domain Controllers with separate domain names, that reside on the same vlan, the following message  is generated when you try to log in to either of the DCs from a machine assigned to that particualr domain:

The name or security ID (SID) of the domain specified is inconsistent with the trust information of that domain.

Example Domain A has file server b in AD Doman B has File server  C on it.  Usernames and accounts are created on both domains, and added to the domain admin group, but if you try to log on from File server B to domain A that message (above) shows up.  Same thing happens on Domain B.  Anyone know what causes this, or if its even possible to have this type of set up?  These DCs are stand alone....are there is no trust set up betwen them.  They have to remain separate, for a test we are getting ready to run.
