server not found

Hello all,
I am running win xp on a Dell 2400 Desktop. I never had a problem with IE accessing my bank information. About 6 weeks ago I was unable to access my bill paying service through my bank. After many hours with the Bank and with SBC/AT&T DSL I have come to the conclusion that it must be something in my PC that is causing the problem. All of the self diagnostic services online and on my PC have found no problems or conflicts. Other than an outdated Java Script program. I have cleared my cache, cleared ou tcookies, internet files, lowered my internet security to nothing, enabled all cookies, added the pages I wish to visit to my 'always allow" sites. I have changed browsers from IE to Firefox to Netscape and none will access my bank or us.army.mil (work address). I receive a Site not Found or server not found error message. My computer at work will access all sites without incident. What am I overlooking? Thank you in advance for any and all assistance.

dragonmed,

When attempting to connect to secure  websites such as banks, college and university websites, government websites, etc... one of the things that these sites will do is verify that no known virus or other malware is attempting to gain access to them from your computer.  If the secure site detects that a known virus or other malware is trying to access their secure site from your computer, the defensive mechanism of the secure site will close your connection.  This will result in a "Cannot Find Server" or similar error.  If you can still access most other sites, but not any secure websites, then your system may very well have become infected with something which is triggering this response.

Update your anti-virus software, your anti-spyware software and completely scan your system.  Clean anything that these programs find.  If you do not have anti-virus software, you can download AVG, Anti-Vir or any of a number of good anti-virus applications from www.download.com.  If you do not have anti-spyware software, you can download Spybot Search&Destroy, AdAware and other good anti-spyware applications from www.download.com.  Another good source of Windows software is www.tucows.com (The Ultimate Collection Of Windows Software).

I also had this issue and found that it was the google toolbar pop up blocker causing the problem. Even turning off the pop up blocker did not help... I had to un-install the toolbar, then all was good again.
