If you have not yet upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 2, you need to disable the Windows XP built in firewall in order to get file and printer sharing to work. If you have Service Pack 2, you need to configure the firewall to allow local network access.
Thanks Steve - I'll try it, if I can figure out how to do that. I was not aware that XP had a built in firewall that I needed to disable. The laptop does not have SP2 installed, and it will not. I installed SP2 on my PC and I haven't been able to print ever since. I'm still scratching me head over that.
To disable the XP firewall, go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections, right-click on you network connection, select Properties from the drop down menu, click on the Advanced tab, and uncheck the box under Internet Connection Firewall. If you have any third party firewalls running, make sure that firewall is configured to allow local network traffic.
