How exactly is your network configured? From what you describe I would expect you to be using: wall -> cable/dsl-modem -> router -> computer. If this is the case then having your desktop set as the way to the internet would not work, as everything should be going to the router to get out.
My braodband connection is through a cellular USB modem (we do not have wired high speed access where we live.) The only way I could understand to make that work is to set up my desktop as a host to the network, but I couldn't make that work.
So you have internet connection sharing enabled on the system with the cellular USB modem? Do you have the correct connection shared out? I haven't run ICS myself, but I do know if you share out the wrong connection that the rest of the local network can't reach the internet.
I'd recommend doing a search for Internet Connection Sharing set up instructions, as that is probably what you need to get things working.
