Awesome. Pretty much what I figured from your previous responses to other needy folks. Thanks for the help John. I'll give the device manager a try, but will probably end up splurging the 16 bucks on the modem.
It is my opinion the intermittient "no dialtone" and not hanging up are related to a damaged modem. That would also contribute to a slower connection. The slowdown most likely would be from a driver issue, but coupled with the other two symptoms points to a damaged analog section of the modem.
If you want to eliminate software, you can delete the modem in the Device Manager, reboot, let the driver be loaded, and see if that gets the modem working as it used to new. If not, you are probably looking for a new modem.
Here is a PCTel modem for the 8200. Calling Dell Spare Parts (number below) you can order the Conexant if you are out of warranty. Of course if in warranty, call Tech Support or better yet use the Dell Chat Portable Support - it is better.
