Several Inspiron 8200 modem connection problems

Question

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with an AC97 v92 software modem (I presume it's a Conexant, given the CXT manufacturer symbol in the device manager). I'm currently running Windows XP professional SP2, and the driver version (also from device manager) is 7.4.1.0 from 11/11/03, also from CXT. I began having problems, however, while still running the XP home that came with the computer, possibly after installing an 'updated' driver from Dell. The initial symptom was a slowdown of connection speed. I used to be able to connect at 48k routinely from this phone line. My girlfriend's computer, an older IBM laptop, still does so without difficulty. I currently can't get anything over about 31k. I _believe_ this started after I updated drivers from the Dell support website, but a driver rollback didn't seem to help. (I have yet to try a couple even older versions of the driver...) Also, I've developed issues with the modem frequently giving me a 'no dial tone' warning, as well as the modem failing to release the line after I've disconnected (e.g., I can't use the phone until I unplug the cable). The no dial tone warning is intermittent, however, and is corrected simply by unplugging and replugging the cable in. (Incidentally, the modem now frequently hangs up as well.) I've looked through the forums, and have found numerous references to similar problems, though usually one at a time. Are the 'no dial tone' and not releasing the line problems likely due to a surge from a lightning strike and a bad analog side of the modem even though they're intermittent? Secondly, is the slow connection speed part of the same issue, or could it be a driver problem still? All diagnostics on the modem look fine. If it is because of a damaged modem, I guess it's a moot point. Finally, if this requires modem replacement, if I simply call the Dell spare parts number and give them my computer info, they can tell me the part that I need, correct? Awesome. Pretty much what I figured from your previous responses to other needy folks. Thanks for the help John. I'll give the device manager a try, but will probably end up splurging the 16 bucks on the modem.

It is my opinion the intermittient 'no dialtone' and not hanging up are related to a damaged modem.  That would also contribute to a slower connection.  The slowdown most likely would be from a driver issue, but coupled with the other two symptoms points to a damaged analog section of the modem. If you want to eliminate software, you can delete the modem in the Device Manager, reboot, let the driver be loaded, and see if that gets the modem working as it used to new.  If not, you are probably looking for a new modem. Here is a PCTel modem for the 8200.  Calling Dell Spare Parts (number below) you can order the Conexant if you are out of warranty.  Of course if in warranty, call Tech Support or better yet use the Dell Chat Portable Support - it is better.

Since it is the PCTel, you would need a different driver.
