Share printer in Vista/XP with docking station

I'm trying to get printer sharing to work. My HP printer is connected to a new Dell laptop, via USB cable and a docking station. I have a desktop computer networked with a wired router that I would like to set up to share this printer.

In Vista I have activated Network Discovery and Printer Sharing on the laptop that's hooked up to the printer. I have gone to the printer itself and marked it to be shared and it shows the two people's heads. I also downloaded a new Vista driver for the printer from HP.

The network seems to be working fine. I can share files on the XP computer here on my Vista computer, and the status bar shows the two computers with globe indicating there is an active network and internet access.

However, when I go to the desktop computer (with XP) and try to Add Printer, it finds this computer, but doesn't show any printers. (I choose Network and then Browse for Printer.)

Any ideas what's wrong? The HP Chat guy blamed it on my laptop docking station. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. However, I've followed that document to a tee and still can't get my desktops to find the printer across the network. Anyone have any experience with a docking station - is that the problem?

On the computers that u can't get to share a printer, u have to double click on my network places find one of the two computers that the print sharing is working on and double click it then find the printer double click it Win XP will ask if you want to download the drivers to this printer select yes and ok the printer driver will be downloaded to your laptop an then you will be able to print on the network from any where in the house.

Try turning off your firewall on both computers temporarily to see if you can add the printer. Once the printer is added then turn on the firewalls one at a time and see if you still see the printer. It may be that your firewall on one system or the other needs to be configured to allow the printer.
