Sharing Files and Printer On a Wireless Network

Hi everyone,

I have a Inspiron 6000 that I use with my Linksys router (54 mbps) and it gives me great internet connection. The only problem is that I can't share files or printers between the two computers.
Each time I try to access the network I get an error message that tells me that I don't have access even though it seems that I have all the right settings. Also it seems weird that my firewall has a group policy ( I want to change this).

Thxs for reading and for helping.

Peter

Have you shared out your folders and printers to the network?

Yes, I have shared files on both computers, but when I click on see workgroup computers it freezes up.

PS.  As a quick alternative, you can also disable their firewalls.

What firewall(s) are you using on your computers?  Have you configured them for file and printer sharing?  If you are using Windows Firewall, it can be done with a single tick to its Control Panel icon.

If you are using another firewall, you will need to configure it to open up the following ports to the local IP address 127.0.0.1:
  • UDP 137
  • UDP 138
  • UDP 445
  • TCP 139
  • TCP 445

The only firewall that is running on my Inspiron 6000 is the Windows one, but it has a group policy on it so that I cannot change the setting. (It is off anyways.)

But where are the printer and files you are trying to access?  If you are trying to access another computer from your 6000, the troubleshooting should be focused on the other.

I'm trying to access the files on my main computer. I would also like to use my main computer to access the files on my laptop.

In that case you need to configure both computers.
