what kind of router. make sure u use windows client to run wireless card. dont use intels proset. If u have the linksys router buy a pair of the -7 gain antennas that go on the router. get rid of the antennas that came with the router. the old ones unscrew. I bought a pair of antennas for under $45 from amazon.com or bestbuy. I had sorta same prob with my 9300 and intel pro card.

I have a Belkin pre-n router.  I am convinced that it is putting out a strong signal.  I can pick up an excellent signal wherever I go in the house.  It just decreases after the computer is on for a few minutes.
You mentioned Intel ProSet.  I switched to "Client" and the signal strength went to excellent.  It will be interesting to see if it remains.

i  read somewhere that one cause of that problem could be that you have your wireless router or if you are operating near a wireless phone.... it would disrupt your signal as some wireless phone operates on 2.4ghz the same frequencies as some wireless routers..

I've got the 2200bg card in my 8200. Driver problems plague the Intel wireless chipset. The 8.0.12.9000 drivers have fixed my problems that were exactly as you have described.

Changing to Windows Client seems to have worked.  I left the computer on for a few hours and the signal strength did not decrease.  The mips varied all over the place but signal strength stayed the same.  I will continue to watch it and let you know.

Thanks.

Hi all..I have been reading all this forum , as I just installed a 2200bg in my Dell Latitude C600, and have been experiencing the same frustration as you all have. It starts great at 54Mbps, with excellent signal strength, yet within minutes, it has dropped to 48, then 36 and ultimately 24 or worse...last night.. 11.

The odd thing, is i installed a 2200bg in my Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255 laptop 6 months ago, and have excellent and 54 all the time, maybe only once in a while dropping to 48...thats why i didn't hesitate to buy anothe Intel Pro 2200BG.

This morning i tried an experiment, and swaped the cards between the laptops, expecting to see the "new" 2200bg, continuing to drop speed in the old faitfull Toshiba, but alas! NO! It continues to do just fine, while the Dell continues to drop with the 2200bg that was in the Toshiba, which always did fine. So, at this point, to me,it is not the card, but the laptop!

This would seem to indicate that the motherboard in the dell is what is causing the speed issues.

I should note that to make the card work in the Toshiba 6 months ago, i hd to do the "tape over pin 11": trick, so i taped the pin 11 today to make the new one work on the Toshiba, and left the tape on the old one, now in the Dell.

One other difference, the DELL has WinXP Pro SP2, and the toshiba WinXP Home SP1. I assume I would have to re-install Windows to get SP2 off the Dell, as it came with winxp pro sp2 already there, it is not listed in the add/remove list.

Comments? Help?

It is not strictly a Dell problem. Probably the driver set on your Dell has the problem.

Just google "2200bg signal problems" to find out. My only fix was going back to an older driver version that does not support the power management.

A good portion of the power management problem is its looking for Cisco power management protocol that most of our routers do not have. This controls the transmission power as per your signal strength, distance from the router, signal quality, etc.

Its broke in Intel's drivers.

Changing to the Microsoft client made it take longer for my signal to drop off, however it still did it. the 8.0.xx drivers I posted above work without issue for days now. The lowest connection I've gotten since was 48mb, which jumped to 54 as soon as I accessed anything over the network.

i use an intel pro 2915 and a d-link 524 wireless router...always had a constant 54mbps, it drops sometimes but goes back to the maximum signal strength... i have a i6000d and never had any complaints or problems with it..

Trust me, I do this for a living. Its a driver issue that spans more than just Dell.

google "2200bg problems" to find people with all brands having the same issues.

I was using a belkin 54mbps router (F5D7230-4) v 1444, till this morning, when their firmware update fried the router!!!! Luckily, my son had a extra Netgear WGR614. Belkin is sending me a new one overnight!

Anyway, I am using the current Intel driver, 9.0.2.31 and even with the Netgear router, same lousey speed drops. What doesn't make any sense to me, is that the same card, in my other laptop, works flawlessly...Toshiba. When i switch the cards, still the DELL Latitude C600 has teh speed problems. Must be something in the Dell. I even reinstalled Windows, with SP1,rather than SP2...same same same.. Only other difference, is my Toshiba has Pentium 4 2.4, and Dell has Pentium 3 850. Tried all the available drivers from Dell and Intel, and tried having windows control, and intel control...NO DIFFERENCE with any config. Also did the power settings....

I'd hate to buy another brand mini pci card and have same problem...And don't want to use the pcmcia slot, where i get good 54 speed all the time.

This just leads to the DELL somehow.........

Dunno. A portion of whatever driver issue may remain on your Dell, a registry entry, something. The Toshiba drivers may have had power management disabled or the Toshiba power management app may control it.
