Simple file transfer between 2 computers

Question

What is the simplest way to hook 2 computers sitting side by side to transfer files? 1) Desktop OS is Windows 2000 Pro 2) Dell 2200 notebook OS is Windows XP Home   Is there an incompatibility between 2K Pro and XP Home?   I've tried networking with router, cables and adapters and cable modem. No luck.   Any simple computer to computer hook up that will work is fine by me.   Any suggestions appreciated.   Woffy

Assuming that your desktop has an onboard LAN then you can connect both computers up using a crossover CAT5 cable.
