Usually a modem comes with systems.  Are you sure there is no modem included in the basic package?  If you want to send/receive faxes and if you are connecting to the internet vial a dial-up connection then you will need a modem.  If you are connecting to the internet via broadband (e.g. DSL or Cable) you do not need a modem but you should have an Ethernet (NIC) adapter.
